Overwatch player and streamer Fuey500 has been handed down a ban by Blizzard for playing Torbjorn. Now before you worry about playing the Swedish mechanic, lets elaborate, Fuey500 only plays Torbjorn. With Torbjorn, they have managed to accumulate a 58.5% win rate so it isn’t like they are terrible.
There have been reports that Fuey500 has thrown matches when they have been unable to play their hero of choice and even gone AFK in protest. However, in this ban, Blizzard has confirmed that the reason for the ban was due to the pick and composition.
In a forum post, Community Manager Josh Engen responded
I just wanted to chime in and make sure that everyone knows that we’re currently digging into the reports, investigating this ban, and thinking about how this type of situation affects specialized players and their teammates.
We take both sides of the issue very seriously. We believe that players should be able to choose their favorite heroes, but playing as a team (which includes building an effective team composition) is a core part of the Overwatch experience. It’s a delicate balance, and we’re still working on getting it right (and probably always will be).
If you’ve been playing Blizzard games for a while, you’ve probably heard us use the phrase “Play nice; play fair.” It’s like a mantra around the Blizzard campus, and it’s a big part of the way that we approach situations like this. People tend to focus on the “playing fair” part, but they forget about “playing nice.” Sometimes that means switching off at your teammates’ request, and sometimes that means working around your teammate’s specialization.
Either way, Overwatch is more fun when everyone is playing nice.
Thank you for your patience as we investigate this situation, and thank you for your passion/enthusiasm about Overwatch.
The question comes down to, should other players and the developer be in a place where they can decide what character you can/can’t play? While throwing a game or going AFK just because you don’t get your own way isn’t a solution either, we think Fuey500 should be able to pick which hero they want in whatever match they want. We have seen many players “out of composition” that have dominated matches in Overwatch. Plus forcing someone to play a hero they don’t know or have experience with is more likely to lead to a loss than letting them play what they know.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
