The Binding Of Isaac mod team behind Alphabirth, Team Alpha have chosen to put things on hold according to a blog post by Faceman, Head-Coordinator. The reasoning behind the decision was that after the release of the most recent DLC for the Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+, the mod team found it difficult to work with the mod API created by game developer Nicalis.
The API was intended to allow modders to create content for the Binding of Isaac but it became apparent that the API fell short in a number of areas. Unfinished assets, bugs and lack of content in Afterbirth+ were all called out on the blog as to why Team Alpha has chosen to put their modding efforts on hold.
In the first couple weeks and months, the API received a few substantial updates that did work to smooth out the edges and add in some basic features. But as time continued to progress the updates became less frequent, and the issues that were there (and meticulously documented by the community) from the start had still not been touched. As a team, the very clunky nature of the API began to run us down.
The post goes on to explain that the dialogue between the community and Nicalis failed to live up to expectations meaning it was even more difficult to mod the game.
The blog closes by saying
Team Alpha has pushed forward these last few months to get together one last pack to say goodbye to the community for now. We hope that we are proven wrong and comprehensive API updates are just around the corner, but until then we can no longer commit so much energy to working in creating content for a game that shows no support for their dedicated fans.
We hope this isn’t the end, but it feels like it is. Thank you for the good times Isaac community.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
