Atari is making a new console with AtariBox, the companies first in over 20 years. While the design is new, it does give a nostalgic nod to the 1977 Atari 2600 with the option of a wood edition and a black/red edition. Personally, we have a soft spot for the wood panelling version.
The AtariBox includes four USB slots, an HDMI port and an SD Card Reader. The latter feature being something which distinguishes the Atari machine from the Nintendo mini NES and SNES consoles released recently. The SD card allows the console to play classic and modern gaming content.
While Atari hasn’t provided anything in the way of technical details or market plans, the company has confirmed that those kinds of details will be released in the coming months. Specs, games and pricing will be released “step by step” with opportunities for fans to provide feedback as to what they want to see from the machine.
To be kept up to date, Atari invites players to register on their official website.
