The 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China will have eSports on the roster of medal events. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said that it had wanted to reflect “the rapid development and popularity of this new form of sports participation.”
As a build up to being a medal event in 2022, it will first feature as a demonstration sport in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Before that happens, it will also feature in this year’s Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Turkmenistan. At the AIMAG, FIFA 17, MOBA’s and RTA games will be played. That move to be included comes thanks to a partnership between Alisports, the sports wing of web retail giant, Alibaba and the Olympic Council of Asia.
Whether Western countries will follow suit or even see eSports being added to future Olympics events is unknown, but it might have us pay attention to and watch the Olympics if it did.
