Zoë Quinn was one of the main people in the middle of GamerGate after it came to light that Kotaku had allegedly written favourable articles about Quinn’s games thought to be due to the close relationship between reporter and Quinn which a former boyfriend had written about. What happened after that was targetted hate against Quinn and a number of other women in the games industry.
Now Zoë Quinn has written a book called Crash Override with the sub-context “How GamerGate (nearly) destroyed my life and how we can win the fight against online hate.”
You’ve heard the stories about the dark side of the internet-hackers, anonymous hoards attacking an unlucky target, and revenge porn-but they remain just that: stories. Surely these things would never happen to you.
While there is a lot of discussion around GamerGate and the online abuse that went in both directions that aren’t going to be covered in this article, no one should be subject to abuse in person or online. If Quinn’s book can help someone suffering online abuse to get through what they are being subjected to then it is a worth while read.
The book releases on the 5th September 2017 in Kindle and Hardcover formats.
