HTC, makers of the Vive VR headset, have announced the “first-ever subscription model for a VR app store” in the form of the Viveport Subscription. The announcement came as the VR headset celebrates its 1st anniversary.
If you don’t have an HTC Vive don’t worry as on the 5th April HTC will be giving a $100 discount on the device.
Starting on the 5th April, you’ll be able to try the subscription service for one month free. After that, it’ll cost $6.99 or regional equivalent per month. All included, you can take advantage of some or all of the following:
- A free month of Viveport Subscription
- A free download of Arcade Saga
- $100 off Vive for new customers
- And more to come
As well as getting a copy of 2Bears Studios’ Arcade Saga with your subscription you’ll be able to pick five titles per month from a curated library of content.
Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport at HTC Vive said
The marketplace for Vive apps has grown at a tremendous pace with more than 1,600 titles now available across different app stores and over 30 new apps launching daily. The rapid growth of the app market is a win for VR overall yet it can present discoverability challenges that affect both customers and content creators. Introducing a subscription model to VR is a natural evolution of where this market is going, and as film, music and TV have proven it’s becoming the preferred way customers want to explore and experience entertainment content.
