Many non-gaming groups have jumped onto eSports including NBA teams, football teams and Universities. Now, Washington D.C. has joined in by sponsoring the eSports upstart, NRG.
NRG is owned by Sacramento Kings owners Andy Miller and Mark Mastrov and has big investments from the likes of Shaquille O’Neal
The team has representation in games including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Super Smash Bros., For Honor, and more.
The move by Washington D.C. is part of a campaign by the city to be seen as a hub for the college-aged generation and sees eSports as a way to achieve that goal. Chairman of Events D.C. Max Brown said
This is just another prong in our strategic approach to continue to make D.C. a great place to live and work and play.
The city also has bigger things in mind with a plan to build a new arena for both sports and eSports events. The arena is scheduled to open in late 2018 or early 2019.
