Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan, Game Director for Overwatch, has confirmed that one of the Overwatch Heroes has autism. The reveal came via a response Kaplan wrote to a fan who asked whether Symmetra had autism after seeing a reference in the comic, A Better World.
In the comic, Symmetra says
Sanjay has always said I was… Different. Everyone has. Asking where I fit on the spectrum.
It used to bother me because I knew it was true.
It doesn’t bother me anymore.
Because I can do things nobody else can do.
This statement had fans speculating what it actually meant with the belief that it referred to where Symmetra fit on the autism spectrum.
When a fan named just as Samuel asked whether this was the case, Kaplan responded confirming that was what the reference alluded to. Kaplan responded
I’m glad you asked about Symmetra. It was very astute of your to notice that she mentioned the spectrum in our comic. Symmetra is autistic. She is one of our most beloved heroes and we think she does a great job of representing just how awesome someone with autism can be.
