A parody of Overwatch and Playboy called Playwatch Magazine has been forced to close after Blizzard hit them with a copyright claim for infringing Blizzard’s intellectual property rights. Originally created by Deviant Art user manusogi, the Playwatch Magazine covers included images of the Overwatch characters which were accompanied with ‘articles’ like “Classified File: Doomfist,” “75 Ways to Die,” “Playwatch Interviews Bastion,” and “Talking to Support Heroes.”
The covers were more reminiscent of Playboy’s recent run where they decided nudity wasn’t for them anymore, although they have gone back to that format recently.
The artwork soon saw fans take it to the next level with Overpog.com putting together an actual PlayWatch Magazine which included articles, interviews with real-life cosplayers and fan art. It didn’t take itself too seriously either, an interview with Bastion saw responses of Beeps and Boops as you would expect from the war machine turned bird lover.
It seems that Blizzard wasn’t happy with the fact the project had taken to Patreon to be funded, in doing so it was earning money from Blizzard’s intellectual property which is a big no-no. Or, Blizzard just wasn’t happy with their characters being cast in a more adult light than they would like.
Their announcement reads
Dear Playwatch Fans,
We have received a notification from a digital copyright protection agency that claims Playwatch Magazine infringes Blizzard’s intellectual property rights. For that reason, we have contacted Blizzard directly and decided to close the website until we have an answer from them.
We have spent our time and resources to make Playwatch a big project, and this has clearly paid off. Your help and enthusiasm made it all worth it.
We started several months ago with the goal of bringing Overwatch fans a new way of enjoying the game and creating a place where artists and writers could share their work with the rest of the community.
The entire Playwatch Team is extremely grateful for your support. It has been a privilege getting to know you all, and we will keep you updated with any news we have.
If you want to contact us, we will read all emails sent to [email protected].
We will see you in the battleground Heroes!
Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
