Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the last game for the Wii U to be made by Nintendo themselves. That, of course, leaves the platform open for 3rd party companies like Ubisoft to still release games but we wouldn’t hold out for one with the Switch launch so close at hand.
While the platform is getting its final games and production of the console is being stopped, the online communities around games like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon are due to live on, at least for the foreseeable future according to Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fila-Aime.
The Wii U was seen as a flop after the Wii sold so strongly. This was in part due to Nintendo’s poor marketing and explanation of what the Wii U was and what it could do. It was also in part due to the lack of support from a wide range of third-party publishers. Nintendo platforms are notoriously difficult for any company other than Nintendo to make money on.
