Rovio, creators of Angry Birds is opening its first UK-based development studio in London. The Finnish company is tasking the new studio with the development of new MMO games using new IP. Rovio is planning to hire 20 people over the next two years for the London studio.
Antti Viitanen, the senior vice president of studios at Rovio said
Our business is profitably growing and London is the most logical place for us to found a new studio that will complement our overall global mix of internal and external developers.
While Rovio has stuck to Angry Birds over the years, the company recovered from a financial downturn with the Angry Birds movie showing signs that the franchise momentum could be slowing. In 2014, the developer laid off 100 staff after the growth expectations of their flagship franchise weren’t met.
That is why the London studio is looking to build multiplayer mobile games outside of the Angry Birds franchise.
Mark Sorrell, head of studios at Rovio said
We believe that the best game experiences are those that you share with other people. So we’re starting a studio to do exactly this. We look forward to bringing a diverse team together to deliver unique massively multiplayer online games that are creative, inclusive and delightful.
Rovio joins Snapchat who also announced last week that they would be setting up home in London in spite of warnings over Brexit. British tech deals hit a record high in 2016 with more money than ever being diverted into the city from private equity and venture capital firms.
