League of Legends design director, Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street probably assumed that posting on his blog would generate some discussion around the game. What he probably didn’t expect was that it would descend into death threats. Ghostcrawler had been discussing the Reddit thread with players and attempting to clear up aspects of his post and get a dialogue and feedback going but that apparently didn’t appease some.
The backlash from some players in the community stemmed from the fact they felt that Ghostcrawler didn’t properly understand the problem of ADCs and why alternatives like bot lane Ziggs are taking priority.
Ghostcrawler says that tanks like Poppy aren’t really that much of a problem for ADCs to handle. Players didn’t tend to agree with that statement and shared a video showing a Draven/Poppy duel which appears to show how underpowered Marksman are against tanks.
On Friday, Ghostcrawler posted that things had gotten out of hand and that he
had weird phone calls in the middle of the night. I’ve had death threats. I’ve had Blizzard security offer to monitor my house. I’ve had designers who had to work with the FBI on threats. I’m also an upper class, straight, white dude, and I know developers who aren’t who have gotten much, much worse from players. There’s no reason for that. We all love games. That already gives us a lot in common.
It is never OK to direct death threats at anyone else especially not over an opinion and not one about how a video game should be played. The Internet has some level of anonymity but that doesn’t make it acceptable.
