When Crytek closed a number of studios in Budapest, Sofia, Seoul, Shanghai and Istanbul due to financial troubles late last year, it wasn’t clear what would happen to the developers at those locations. Well, Crytek Black Sea which was based in Sofia, Bulgaria has reformed as an independent studio that will be known as Black Sea Games.
The studio is being headed by former Crytek Black Sea managing director, Vesselin Hanjiev. He previously held the title before Crytek purchased the company back in 2008 when they were known as Black Sea Studios.
According to the Black Sea Games website the studio was formed in November 2016 which predates the news that Crytek was closing the studios. This could mean that Crytek had made the move earlier than originally thought. The website also confirms that the studio is working on a project but isn’t ready to announce anything yet.
The newly formed studio’s mission statement reads
Our mission is to create hard-core games that will entertain you over and over again. We believe the best gaming experiences are coming from challenging the players with meaningful choices, while giving them the freedom to create (and share) their own in-game stories.
It isn’t known how many of the original Crytek employees have managed to remain at the developer but it is definitely good news for those who did land a position.
