A Star Wars fan with skills is bringing LucasArts’ Star Wars X-Wing game up to date in Unity. Known as the XWVM community mod, it is a remake of the original 1993 X-Wing flight engine meant to replace the old DOS or Windows executable.
The idea of the mod is to take the Star Wars X-Wing game files which you have from the Good Old Games purchase of the original, then imports them into a new executable wrapper. That means that the game can be run on modern machines without the headaches that the older titles sometimes have running on new, more powerful machines.

When it comes to the mod, the author writes
I chose the name XWVM inspired on ScummVM because:
– It will be a free utility that includes no copyrighted material.
– You need to own the original game, encouraging sales in GoG or other media.
– I will be multiplatform, as Unity3D targets Windows, Mac, Linux and even Android and iOS.
– It will make use of the original resources, but some improvements can be added where it makes sense.
