DoomRL, the Doom Roguelike mod that faced being shut down by ZeniMax’s copyright notice is keeping the project going in the form of DRL. Beyond just a name change, the mod has stripped all DOOM references and has gone open-source.
Co-Creator, Kornel Kisielewicz said it was the plan all along but ZeniMax’s actions accelerated the process.
Originally I was going to do it at the end of the Jupiter Hell Kickstarter, as a thank you to the fans, but with the need to respond to ZeniMax’s letter I’ve had to move that forwards
Jupiter Hell is a spiritual successor to DoomRL using all original assets and is approaching the final days of its Kickstarter campaign. It currently sits at just under $60k funded with a goal of almost $76k (due to currency exchanges) with five days remaining.
Jupiter Hell has been occupying most of my time for several years now, and work on it will only crank up from here. Open-sourcing DRL lets me rely on community support much more strongly. It also gives the community the chance to fork or expand or mod it as they see fit, and I look forward to seeing what creativity they can produce.
