Razer has acquired THX Ltd. in a deal that sees the peripheral and hardware maker pick up the audio and visual company assets and staff.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed but it is known that the audio-visual company will be allowed to keep its autonomy and do what it does best.
Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan commented on the deal saying
This acquisition will allow us to reinforce Razer’s leadership in gaming and extend the brand into broader areas of entertainment, while at the same time empowering THX to develop into a global powerhouse, independently.
Of course, you don’t just buy a company if you aren’t going to make use of it
THX CEO Ty Ahmad-Taylor said that he
Wouldn’t be surprised if we launched a few joint products with Razer.
So, perhaps, in the near future, we can expect a range of Razer branded audio equipment and peripherals containing the newly acquired audio technology. With the rise of VR, immersive audio experiences are just as important as the visual immersion. It wouldn’t be unexpected to see the Razer’s OSVR headset making use of improved audio experiences coming from the acquisition.
Also, the THX Live division that provides audio solutions for live events may combine with Razer who provides audio solutions for eSports events.
THX was originally founded by George Lucas in 1983, it is currently based in San Francisco, California.
