Riot is looking to change the way it assists League of Legends teams financially which it is looking to fund via crowdfunding options for the World and Mid Season Invitational (MSI) prize pools.
Starting with Worlds 2016, League of Legends players will be able to contribute to the prize pool by purchasing in-game items. 25% of the revenue from each year’s Championship skin and Championship Ward will be added to the prize pool. So this year, buying Championship Zed will contribute towards the Worlds 2016 prize pool.
Next year, 25% of the revenue from the Challenger skin will be put towards the prize pool for the Mid Season Invitational.
Additionally, to help support the top teams, 25% of revenue from the Team Championship skins will be given to the players who inspired the skin. This revenue will also be applied retroactively. So any former world champions that had Team Championship skins based on them will get a decent payout.
To aid teams in the short term, each league will also set aside a certain amount which it will then provide to each team to help them out. In the EU LCS, each team will have 100,000€, 50% of which will go to the players.
Riot is also looking to make improvements to advertising and merchandising but hasn’t gone into the specifics of their plans at this time.
