Japanese gymnastics Olympian, Kohei Uchimura apparently enjoys Pokémon GO so much that he faced a $4,964 phone bill.
Uchimura was introduced to the augmented reality title by his fellow teammates who have headed to Rio for the Olympics. Upon landing in Sau Paulo for training ahead of the games, Kohei Uchimura began playing Pokémon GO in his spare time. The impressive phone bill balance came about not from in-game microtransactions but because he appears to have forgotten that playing Pokémon GO in International locations uses data roaming.
Uchimura told Kyodo News that he had managed to amass a “500,000 yen ($4,954),” phone bill.
“He looked dead at the team meal that day,” teammate Kenzo Shirai added.
Kohei Uchimura won’t be paying the princely sum, though, instead, he called his mobile phone service provider and explained the situation. The operator agreed to charge him a flat rate of just $30 per day for his data roaming needs and waived the remaining balance.
So the moral of the story is that if you are going abroad and play Pokémon GO, unless you and an Olympic athlete, you might want to set up roaming plans with your provider before you go. Or turn off data roaming and enjoy the world instead of looking at it through a Pokémon GO lens.
