According to a report by the O’Fallon Missouri Police Department on their Facebook page, four individuals have used Pokémon GO to lure victims who they robbed at gunpoint.
The police force believes that the suspects placed a beacon to a pokestop, this in turn caused players to head to the location. They then used the game to detect when people were around the location at which point they would approach and rob them.
This morning at approximately 2 am we responded to the report of an Armed Robbery near the intersection of Highway K and Feise Road. We were able to locate four suspects occupying a black BMW a short time later and recover a handgun. These suspects are suspected of multiple Armed Robberies both in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties.
While events like this can be worrisome, it does highlight the fact that no matter how engaging a game is, you should be aware of your surroundings and stay within areas you are familiar with.
