Disney has decided to call an end to its Disney Infinity series after three outings. The decision comes at a cost of about $147 million which includes employee severance and inventory write-down.
The decision also closes the games developer Avalanche Software and puts 300 developers out of work. Avalanche Software is not to be confused with Avalanche Studios which develops Just Cause and Mad Max among others.
The announcement was made via the company’s earnings report.
And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.
While Infinity won’t see a fourth release, Infinity 3.0 will still see more releases including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.
Disney Infinity 3.0 is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Free versions are available for PC, iOS and Android which allow you to build and create in the Toy Box.
We wish all those affected by the decision the best in their future endeavors.
