Streaming site Twitch has started its move to bring a more social experience by starting beta tests of a new friends list feature.
The new feature allows site users to connect and add friends on the site through their profile page. In return you will be informed when the friend is online and have the option to chat with them through private messaging.
Twitch announced the new feature at PAX East and confirmed that select Twitch community members were running the Beta now. Attendees at PAX East were also able to sign up for early access by visiting the Twitch booth (#9044 if you are there this weekend).
The friends list will have a 500 contact limit and private messages are to be called “Whispers” and is a system that the company hopes bridges the gap that the site currently has where only broadcasting streamers have interactions while site visitors are left in open chat with basic features.
It is not yet known when the full rollout of Friends will happen and there is currently no way to register your interest to join the early access unless you are at PAX East. If you happen to know someone that went to PAX East, when they invite you as a friend, you will then get an invite to join the Beta too.
