Once a year, people go crazy and perform unnecessary pranks on others all in the name of April Fools, a 1st April tradition which makes no real sense but still it happens. You have to read everything multiple times just in case you missed the pun and look a fool when you gladly announce that “Company Y just bought Company X for $1 trillion” only to find out it was a joke.
Some April Fools can actually be quite entertaining, especially those based in gaming. Here are the best gaming April Fools pranks performed by our favourite companies and representatives.
Blizzard is known for its creative April Fools and 2016 is no exception. The newest addition to the Blizzard game library was announced as Hearthstone: The MMO. Play Hearthstone like you never played it before with “Beta sign-ups coming Soon™.”
CD Projekt Red
CD Projekt Red explain the problems with developing Geralt’s horse, Roach in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Problems included the ongoing motion sickness by the horse test team. Here is how the developers and the bug creation department got around it with custom motion capture sessions and the addition of bugs to keep players grounded. Roach also gets a bigger role for the horse in the expansion Blood and Wine.
Now a part of the GameStop empire, this geeky retailer occasionally takes their April Fools and turns them in to a real product you can buy later. We can only hope it is the case this year with the amazing Vertical Landing Mentos & Diet Coke Rocket which can be yours for a mere $24.99. Beat Elon Musk and his SpaceX company to get the first reusable rocket system. The kit comes with everything you need except for the Diet Coke fuel itself, you need to get that at your local rocket fuel supplier… Or *Insert your local Supermarket name here* whichever is best for you.
2016 is apparently the year of VR or so we are told. Google is getting ahead of the curve with its Google Cardboard but it does seem a little bit DIY and cheap. Google know this so have announced the new version for the style conscious… The Google Cardboard Plastic. The device “Google Cardboard Plastic combines everything you love about virtual reality headsets with everything you love about reality.”
Available in six colours the device is also water proof, which is great because when we got our Google Cardboard wet the resolution suffered greatly. You’ll also be happy to know that is it compatible with all existing apps.
UK game retailer, GAME announced a new service for gamers that worry about their health and their ability to game in the future. When gaming is so much a part of your life you want to make sure it stays that way and now you can with Thumb Insurance. For just £3 a month you can ensure that if the worst happens and you strain your thumb by performing a combo in Killer Instinct or Street Fighter, you can be sure that you and your family will be looked after and gaming will live on.

While in itself the robot vacuum cleaner Roomba isn’t gaming related, one that learns to Zumba with you as you exercise in front of your Kinect, Sony Camera or Wii U can be. Put the little guy down and now you have yourself an exercise partner so you don’t feel as foolish flailing as people look through your window thinking you are in some kind of distress.
Stronghold Kingdoms coming to Nokia 3310
Firefly Studios has announced it has successfully ported Stronghold Kingdoms to everyone’s favourite un-smart phone, the Nokia 3310. They even have an announce trailer showing what excitement you can expect.
Remember, whatever you read today be sure to think about whether it is real or not before sharing with everyone to save yourself. Have you seen another April Fools that you enjoyed? If so, let us know and share the laughs.
