Retail giant, Amazon has released its own royalty-free AAA game engine “Lumberyard”.
Lumberyard is based on CryEngine and has had tweaks made to focus it on multiplayer and streaming based games by adding support for Twitch, the streaming service also owned by Amazon.
The engine currently supports PC and current generation of consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with planned support for mobile and VR due in the future.
While there are no subscription fees or royalties to be paid, Amazon is looking to monetise the engine by requiring Amazon Web services (AWS) services as the third-party choice while allowing developers to use their own first party servers. Also, in conjunction with the engine Amazon is launching GameLift which is a paid service for “deploying, operating, and scaling session-based multiplayer games.”
You can download Lumberyard from the official website.
