John Smedley, former boss of Sony Online Entertainment and then Daybreak Studios, has re-emerged after taking a break since he left Daybreak back in July. With him, he brings news of a new studio he has founded called Pixelmage Games which has its first game, Hero’s Song.
Hero’s Song is a 2D pixel art action RPG which aims to be a “hardcore action RPG for hardcore gamers”. The video covering the campaign highlights this with features such as perma-death, although you do get a second chance for redemption if you complete the trials, and always on friendly fire.
Playable alone or on self hosted servers with friends, or randoms if you want to risk it,
Fantasy author, Patrick Rothfuss, is working with Pixelmage on the game’s narrative, story and world building aspects.
The studio has actually been working quietly since October 2015 and already raised $1 million in private funding with the Kickstarter campaign looking to take it the rest of the way.
