When the word got out that Sleeping Dogs would see more content based around its universe and lore, players were rightfully excited. That was until Square Enix and United Front Games announced that it would be a free-to-play game called Triad Wars for PC.
Announced in October of 2013, the game really didn’t catch on to the market they hoped, so much so that United Front Games has confirmed that the game will not make it out of Beta status. At 12pm Pacific on the 20th January 2016, Triad Wars will be no more.
In the announcement made on the forums
Since the start of the Triad Wars Closed Beta this year, diligent Enforcers have run rampant through the streets of Hong Kong, killing rivals and building Empires. During this time we have gathered immense amounts of feedback, information, and data on the game. We’ve loved seeing how you’ve played Triad Wars but we know it wasn’t right for many of you so we’re letting you know today that we are going to close the beta and service on January 20th 2016 at 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. That’s 4 weeks from today and over this time we’re going to leave the game up and running for you to continue to enjoy but we will not be accepting any more purchases.
As a free-to-play game, Triad Wars allowed players to purchase Gold with real world money, while not everyone will be happy those that bought Gold during December can apply for a refund by contacting the Triad Wars Customer Support. According to the refund announcement, the refunds will start to be processed on the 29th December.
Hopefully what Square Enix and United Front Games realise is that there is an appetite for another Sleeping Dogs title, but not a free-to-play version.
