Rocket League has generated nearly $50 million in revenue across 8 million registered players since its release in July on PC and PlayStation 4. The figures were highlighted in a Wall Street Journal report out today.
The recent DLC which added the DeLorean was approved by Steven Spielberg and revenue is split between Psyonix and Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. The DeLorean was such a success that Psyonix is currently in talks to bring other famous cars to the game including Knight Rider’s KITT.
Rocket League is the spiritual successor to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars which was built by a team of just 10 developers and was released for $14.99 and then price dropped to $9.99 where it garnered more sales. Rocket League however, picked up a following after it released for free as part of PlayStation Plus subscriptions. While numbers of free downloads have not been disclosed, it is reported to be in the several million player area.
