Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 is to get PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility capabilities.
The feature has already been used in a more focused way, alongside the release of Star Wars Battlefront. PlayStation 4 owners that purchased Star Wars Battlefront also received a digital download code for Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. All titles were emulated from their PlayStation 2 days for use on the new Sony console with Super Star Wars even being a Super Nintendo title.
A Sony representative said
We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.
It is clear to see the emulation as the boot sequences of the titles show the non-HD upscaled PlayStation 2 logo and all the issues that existed in the original still exist today which rules out a remaster version being created.
The PlayStation 4 Star Wars bundle is currently available with Battlefront and digital download codes for the legacy Star Wars titles.
Microsoft recently added Xbox 360 backwards compatibility with their “Windows 10” update for the Xbox One.
