Convicted SWATter, 22-year-old Matthew Tollis has been handed down a jail sentence of one year and one day for the role he played in the hoaxes.
Tollis was a member of TCOD (TeAM CrucifiX or Die) and pleaded guilty to SWATting streamers and calling in bomb threats to schools around the US including one in New Jersey.
Based in Connecticut, he SWATted six streamers and called in bomb and shooter hoaxes at a number of education institutions.
Deirdre Daly, U.S. Attorney in Connecticut summarised the claims against Tollis in court documents:
Mr. Tollis knowingly and willfully participated in several phone calls to secondary schools and universities during which claims were made that a bombing or active shooter incident was taking place, or about to take place
His defence took the stance that he was forced into it by other gamers he met online and threatened him and were pushing for house arrest which obviously didn’t come to pass with todays ruling
Mr. Tollis naively thought the best course of action to stop this harassment would be to join” the group that was threatening him in making the calls, attorney Jeremy Weingast wrote in court documents. Several members of the group are foreign nationals, prosecutors said.
