John Smedley, CEO and President of Daybreak Game Company has stepped down to take a break from the company. Current chief operating officer (COO) Russell Shanks taking over the executive position effective immediately.
The move comes after some high profile run ins with Lizard Squad especially Julius Kivimaki who Finnish courts provided unexpected leniency towards after being accused of over 50,000 computer related crimes, calling in a bomb hoax against a plane that Smedley was on, attacked Daybreak Game Company servers, released his private information online, ruined his credit and targeted his family as well as initiating SWATting events.
After the courts ruling, Smedley took to Twitter to announce to Kivimaki that he was “coming for” him. In response, Lizard Squad launched a DDoS attack against Daybreak Game Company titles including H1Z1 and PlanetSide 2.
Whether Smedley was pushed by private-equity group Columbus Nova who bought Daybreak Game Company when it was known as Sony Online Entertainment, or if Smedley made the decision himself is unknown. It is understood however that he will return to the company after a break in a different position.
