Nolan North isn’t altogether sold on Mark Wahlberg being cast as Nathan Drake in the movie adaptation of Uncharted.
The voice of Nathan Drake in the Naughty Dog titles has a Q&A session at Metrocon 2015 in Tampa, Florida covering a range of topics which you can see in the video below (movie discussion starts at 10 minutes 47 seconds).
When asked about his thoughts on the rumour of Mark Wahlberg being cast as Nathan Drake for the movies, North responds
I was hoping they would do somebody younger, Mark Wahlberg’s about my age. So its like, I don’t know how many sequels you are going to get, are you not planning for sequels? That means you’re not planning its very good, that means the scripts kinda weak.
He also discusses Amy Hennig’s (Writer/Director for Uncharted 1-3 and now working on a Star Wars project at EA’s Visceral) role in the movie, that of unpaid consultant
She was a better writer than them but she doesn’t have the Hollywood name that is the reason I could never play Drake.
As to why he believes Wahlberg was cast for the role instead of himself he adds
You put Mark Wahlberg in a movie, they have numbers of how many tickets he’ll sell in Europe and that’s what they’ll do. They’ll get the overseas numbers, they know they are getting their investment back overseas so now everything domestic (US) is now all profit. Its all money, that’s all it is.
North did confirm he was in talks to make a cameo which would be a nod to the players of the games but didn’t want it to be a “Where’s Waldo” (Where’s Wally in UK) and that he didn’t want to be like “your coffee Mr. Drake”.
I could be one of Drake’s buddies, or like a bartender – just give me a scene. I don’t want to be like “Hai”
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due for release on PlayStation 4 in 2016. If you can’t wait that long then Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is available on the 9th October for PlayStation 4 which includes all the Single Player campaigns from the first three Uncharted titles, there is no multiplayer component for the collection.
