PC owners who chose to upgrade to the new AMD Fury X card appear to have an unexpected addition to their purchase, pump whine.
AMD graphics cards have historically run hotter than the nVidia counterpart but it was hoped that the new HBM supporting cards in theAMD Radeon R9 Fury X range would be more efficient and quieter due to the use of built-in water cooling.
AMD attempted to quell concerns by saying the pump whine was on an early batch of samples sent to reviewers and that retail cards wouldn’t suffer the same fate. However, tests by some groups like PC Perspective and individuals have found that retail cards may also be affected after all.
AMD then went on to confirm that some retail cards were affected in the first batch but future batches should not sport the same whine noise.
