Long forgotten Sonic X-treme, a Sonic game which never saw the light of day has finally made its way into the hands of players 19 years after it was originally in development.
Originally the work of Sega Technical Institute, the game was being developed as a 3D Sonic game for the Sega Saturn for a 1996 release which never happened. However, the team over at SonicRetro managed to get hold of the source code which they polished, made work on current hardware and is available to download now.
“We would also like you to know that this is an almost as is port of the engine,” the developers explained. “A snapshot in time if you will.”
Currently there is just the one level, the E3 1996 promo show reel jungle level. However, there are more levels planned in the future.
ProtoMedia explains the origins of the project and what happened through the games life.
