GameStop CEO Paul Raines announced at the company’s 2014 Investor Day that they will be scaling back their focus on games and putting more focus into tablet and mobile calling the move GameStop 3.0.
The change in direction involves the planned closure of 2 percent of GameStop’s retail stores in the U.S., between 120 to 130 stores. At the same time the plan expands on the number of stores for several mobile and Apple product retailers under its ownership. This includes
- Over 200 Spring Mobile stores
- 20-25 Simply Mac stores
- 100-150 Cricket stores
GameStop’s diversifying plan comes as digital game distribution grows year on year with Steam, Origin, uPlay and other PC distribution methods as well as the next gen consoles taking more of the potential market from the physical goods retailer and their historically lucrative used games business.
