Sony has abandoned the trademark for The Last Guardian according to the US Patent Office website.
The game by Team ICO has been in development since 2007 has had little in the way of updates or press coverage, combining that with the trademark being abandoned and Sony’s overall financial woes it has led some to believe the game is no longer in development. The last time this rumour occurred in August, Sony laughed off the suggestion the game was no more.
However allowing abandoning a trademark isn’t something usually taken lightly by a Publisher unless they have a different name they want to use or are no longer developing the game.
The Last Guardian was intended to be a PlayStation 3 title when it was shown at E3 in 2009, with the constant delays it was all but confirmed for the PlayStation 4 instead, until now.
Sony is yet to officially comment on the new rumour and why the trademark was abandoned.
