Sony has confirmed that the PlanetSide 2 Beta for PlayStation 4 is still on track for release this year. While a date hasn’t been set, Creative director Matt Higby told Eurogamer to expect more information during the PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas which takes place on the 6th and 7th of December.
PlanetSide 2 was confirmed for PlayStation 4 back in June 2013, the delay according to Higby is that the team want to deliver a “full-on console experience” and not just a port of the PC original.
PlanetSide 2 on PC is a free-to-play title with micro-transactions to buy in game items, the PS4 version will work similarly to the PC version. However, instead of buying the Station Cash virtual currency as PC players do, PS4 owners will buy Marketplace Cash, the same as the PS4 version of DC Universe Online. As for what kind of items you can expect to get in the PS4 version, Higby mentioned that “The items that are sold are going to be the same as the PC items.”
Higby said that they are targeting 1080p resolution and, “we’re still trying to shoot for 60fps. So if we go to 30 it’ll be because we want to maintain a completely solid 30fps. But that’s the optimisation we’re working on right now. And we’re still grinding on it. Generally speaking the client is running at well over 60fps. In a really big fight it bets bogged down. That’s the bottleneck we’re chasing down.
There will be no cross platform play between PC and PlayStation 4 versions of PlanetSide 2. The reason given is that while it is technically possible, “It has to do with platform exclusivity. People don’t necessarily want to be able to take a character you’ve spent money on on the PC and bring that character onto the PS4 without having spent money on the PS4.
