Ingress players on Android and iOS have come together in Britain to capture parts of England and Wales to form the pattern of the Union’s flag, the Union Flag (known to some as the Union Jack which is incorrect but that is for another site to explain why).
Organisation on this scale is no easy task as it requires agreement by everyone on both factions to capture points in set locations to generate the pattern.
Ingress is a game for Android and iOS devices made [email protected] which uses your devices GPS and real world locations to “capture” areas of towns, cities, counties, States and even countries. The game splits players into one of two factions. One faction are the Enlightened who appear Green in game and fight believing their actions will uplift humanity, and bring about the next chapter in human evolution. The Resistance makes up the opposition and are displayed as Blue in game and believe in preserving what freedom humanity has left. Each team has a jokingly assigned nickname by other players in the community based on their colours, the Enlightened are known as “Frogs” or “Toads” while the Resistance are known as “Smurfs”.
The World is the Game
Move through the real world using your Android device and the Ingress app to discover and tap sources of this mysterious energy. Acquire objects to aid in your quest, deploy tech to capture territory, and ally with other players to advance the cause of the Enlightened or the Resistance.
The struggle is being played out globally. Track the progress of players around the world, plan your next steps, and communicate with others using an Intelligence map.
The idea is part of Operation Lest we Forget http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/IngressLWF with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion where UK tax payers can donate and add their tax at no cost to them to increase their pledge. This Remembrance Day is especially poignant as it marks the 100th Anniversary of the day World War I started.
Edit: Apologies to Ingress players on iOS devices that took part and generally play the game. The article has been updated to reflect the Apple platform.
