Valve’s free to play titles have surged ahead on the most played games on Steam. Unsurprisingly, four of the top most played games are Valve titles, and account for almost half of all play time on Steam.
Dota 2 alone has an estimated 25.9 million players, with a total play time of over 3,800 million hours, according to Ars Technica. Team Fortress 2 has 20.3 million players, but less than half the played hours, at just over 1,400 million. That is more than twice the amount of hours put into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
More surprisingly, almost 37% of all games owned on Steam have never been played by their owner and and 17% are played for less than an hour.
Whilst Free to Play is still seen by some in a less than favourable light, it is this area of gaming which is starting to lead the way in player behaviour and playing patterns.
