Twitch based phenomenon, Twitch Plays Pokemon has proven so popular that is has had the unexpected effect of affecting the game based video stream sites chat system.
Twitch Plays Pokemon sees Twitch users sending commands through the chat system which in turn controls the action on screen in Nintendo’s, Pokemon. The game has currently been running for over 8 days solid.
To try and resolve the chat problem that all channels experienced, Twitch moved the channel off of its general chat servers and onto its own dedicated event chat server. This solution helped the situation but did not totally resolve the issues in their entirety.
Twitch Plays Pokemon is hosted by an anonymous Twitch broadcaster who created their own script that allows viewers to type out button inputs in the chat window. Progress, as you’d expect, has been slow.
Twitch is displaying an alert to site visitors confirming work on the chat system across the site:
Chat servers are undergoing maintenance. We are doing this one at a time to reduce impact. Thanks for your patience!
