League of Legends was taken offline on the 30th December after being hit by a DDoS (Denial of Service) attack by the Derp hacking group according to their Twitter. They then switched their focus to pro-gamer James Varga aka PhantomL0rd after he was documenting the games issues via his Twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/PhantomL0rd) live stream mentioning the Derp group within the stream.
The interaction between Derp and Varga led to other gaming services and sites being affected as Derp followed Varga through different games and included: Origin/EA.com, Battlenet by Blizzard, Dota 2, Quake Live, Club Penguin, Reddit as well as other sites. The group said they were carrying out the attacks for “the lulz” in a text chat with Varga.
During the attack, Varga’s personal details made their way online including his home address. This led to someone calling the police department local to Varga’s house claiming hostages were being held there in what has become known as “SWATing”. Armed response teams cuffed Varga only to release him after searching his property.
Varga took to YouTube after the events to share his thoughts about the events that took place.
