Blitz Games Studios based in Leamington Spa, England is to close its doors after 23 years in the industry affecting all 175 employees with 50 of them staying on to finish off current projects at the studio.
Blitz had previously worked on titles including characters like Shrek, Spongebob Squarepants and Mickey Mouse.
Philip Oliver put the decline in profits at Blitz down to the rise in mobile games reducing revenue as titles are much cheaper or even free. He also placed some blame at the feet of Microsoft and Sony who extended the current console generation for longer than the usual 5 year life cycles consoles go through. Finally, he mentions the unwillingness of Publishers to commit to long term projects due to their own tight financial pressures with THQ even closing its own doors back in 2011.
