You are “Tenno”, a group of ancient warriors woken from cryosleep to wage war against the Grineer. Using your advanced armoursuits called, Warframes, you leap into battle like a Space Ninja……
I’m not usually one for free to play games. They usually end up in me playing them for a while then reaching a point where you need to pay to proceed in your “competitiveness” with other players.
This is where Warframe peaked my interest. It has a private and even offline solo mode. So no need to feel outclassed by those hardcore players when you’re put in public matches.
My initial impressions were, “wow this runs pretty sweet on my old 2.0ghz dual core PC “, most games that come out now either won’t run or run at the lowest setting. I could crank this thing up to max and noticed only minor slow down during gameplay; and most of that was probably lag.
The menu interface is a bit confusing to start with mainly because I’m a moocher and probably went into menus I wasn’t supposed to yet. So didn’t fully understand the whole mod system and artifacts etc, but I’ll get used to those in time I’m sure.
That being said, the narrator/helper does a good job of explaining things, what you should be doing and how to do it; even tho I didn’t really listen. I just wanted to get into the action and slash people up. After getting my face rearranged by the enemy ai, I decided to listen to what she had to say. It made a world of difference.
The gameplay itself is pretty well done.
The game uses Procedural Level Generation allowing for the same mission to have many different layouts each time you attempt it, giving you great replay value. Having paid nothing for the game its been a great game so far. I’ve had hours of fun.
A 3rd person style shooter with a ninja sword for melee combat. Which also performs a charged attack slicing enemies clean in half. awesome.
Timing these attacks with your dodge and sprint make it quite tricky at first, again something that will come in time, with practice. There are also wall runs, parkour style ledge jumping, which I had only just figured out how to do.
I have noticed the dreaded micropayments system and that seems to be to buy gear upgrades and unique weapons, which the narrator mentions you can pick up by looting ships etc so you don’t feel forced into buying platinum to buy these blueprints. Although it will take some grinding to gain “game gold” to buy stuff, as per usual with free to play.
Theres also a crafting component, with mods and special skills. I’ve unlocked a few so far by looting but I’m still a bit naive to the whole thing at the moment. Given time tho I’ll get the hang of it.
If you want to grab a copy ( did I mention its free 😉 ) and jump in and co-op with me feel free….. username is same as always … “SilverRook”
The game is still in beta so things are bound to change and get better, but overall I’d say I enjoyed my first experience of… Warframe
